Gwinnett County to hold special election

LAWRENCEVILLE – On Tuesday, March 15, Gwinnett County will hold their special election to elect a new chairman for the Gwinnett County Board of Commissioners.

There are four candidates vying for this post, they are: former Gwinnett County administrator Charlotte Nash of Dacula, formal naval officer Larry Gause of Tucker, retired assistant chief of police Gerald Duane Kissel of Snellville and business owner Will Costa of Lilburn.

This election is being held in wake of the controversial resignation of former Chairman Charles Bannister and the indictment, and eventual resignation, of his replacement, Kevin Kenerly.

Bannister resigned to avoid a perjury charge upon a grand jury investigation of unlawful land deals but was eventually cleared of all charges.

The Friends of Gwinnett Senior Services donated $39,371 to be used for the Transportation Voucher Program in Gwinnett. Recently, federal funds were granted from the New Freedom Act to support a limited number of seniors and persons with disabilities with vouchers to support the cost of transportation for essential trips with priority given to medical appointments and medical procedures.

Public transportation, including paratransit, is limited to certain corridors in the county and cannot meet the transportation needs for all those who need special transportation.
