Unemployment rate didn't change in December

Unemployment rate didn't change in December

(WXIA) -- Metro Atlanta's unemployment rate went unchanged last month. The rate was 6.4 in December 2014, the same as it was in November 2014. It was 6.8 percent in December 2013.

Gwinnett County's December unemployment rate was 5.7 percent.

While the unemployment rate didn't budge, the Atlanta area gained 64,700 jobs last year, the largest December-to-December job growth in nearly 10 years. Georgia Labor Commissioner Mark Butler said many of the new positions were in trade and transportation; business services; leisure and hospitality; financial services; manufacturing; education and health care; government; and construction.

Butler said Georgia has been in the top 10 states for job creation every month since October 2012.

Metro Athens had Georgia's lowest December unemployment rate, at 4.9 percent. The Heart of Georgia-Altamaha region had the highest, at 8.8 percent.

Suspect arrested after he calls 911

BUFORD, Ga -- Police should always be so lucky. A Buford man was arrested for shoplifting after he called 911 himself.

Alfonso Aguilar, 42, of Buford was spotted by loss prevention officers at the Walmart on Buford Drive Monday night. They followed him out of the store after watching him steal several items.

When the employees identified themselves as loss prevention Aguilar pulled out a knife and
"
swung it widely
"
and ran, according to a Gwinnett County Police incident report.
"
So he actually produces a knife in the course of this trying to resist these two guys who he claims later are trying to abduct him or assault him," Cpl. Jake Smith said.

BUFORD, Ga. (WXIA) -- The family of a man who disappeared from his home in Buford three weeks ago increased the reward to $50,000.

Kelly Nash, 25, was gone when his live-in girlfriend woke up early on the morning of January 5.

His cell phone, wallet, keys, pickup truck, and other personal belongings were left behind. He is believed to have been wearing his pajamas, with tan Sperry shoes.

Since then, Nash's family and friends have searched for him, raised reward money, and distributed flyers.

They are now seeking volunteers to help distribute new flyers with the information about the updated $50,000 reward fund.

Nash has been working full time with his father's construction business, and attending college classes to earn a degree in accounting.

There are no solid leads, so far, as Gwinnett County police continue to investigate his disappearance.
