Georgia State Finals: Previews and Predictions

ATLANTA -- This weekend, 10 teams play for a state championship.

Four teams have been in this position as recently as last season; others have never played for a state title. Some teams are facing opponents their schools have never faced. Some schools were predicted to win a state championship before the playoffs started. Other schools were predicted to lose as early as the second round.

All 10 teams have taken different paths, but they are all in the same position now.

What should the fans expect to see? Atlanta.HighSchoolSports.net previews all five games and the computer tool Massey Matchups predicts the exact score and point spread of each matchup.

Large Drug Busts Target Local Residents

GWINNETT COUNTY, GA -- Two separate counties conducted two separate drug investigations culminating in arrests Friday. Police say both are evidence that home grown and sold drugs are still a scourge in our communities.

Gwinnett county police arrested at least 14 local residents of Buford after raiding three separate homes. It was the result of an investigation that started in August. Police say several residents who lived near the houses complained to them. "The citizens of this community are tired of the drugs being sold out of this area," said Corporal Edwin Ritter. "Their property values have gone down because of it."

Ritter said one of the homes at 85 New Street was heavily fortified from the inside. He said people inside the home were selling crack cocaine through a steel door. Buyers would put their money through a slot on the door. "They (police) had to use an explosive device on the rear door to gain entry," Corporal Ritter said.

Armed Robbery in Mall of Georgia During Holiday Shopping

BUFORD, GA -- Shoppers and employees had some nerve-wracking moments at one of the busiest malls in the state during one of the busiest shopping times of the year.

Police say two Dunbar Armored car drivers were robbed while they were reloading an ATM inside the Mall of Georgia Monday morning. The machine was on the second floor of the mall near the Regal Cinemas movie theater.

"The suspect grabbed the bag of money and left out the back door. As he was grabbing the money, the second armored car associate fired one round towards the suspect," said Corporal Edwin Ritter with the Gwinnett County Police Department.

"I said, either that was a gunshot or a couple of palettes fell from very high," said Nancy Mousa who works in the mall. "I was downstairs by the food court and I was talking to somebody, and I heard a big bang and right away. He and I were just startled, we didn't know what to think."

Cold Temps Cause Misery for Everyone from Commuters to Tornado Victims

ATLANTA -- There's nothing like an errant sprinkler system to make a frozen mess for commuters this time of year.

That's what created an unplanned skating rink on busy Powers Ferry Road near Windy Hill Road on Tuesday morning, causing havoc for hundreds of Cobb County drivers.

Across town, hundreds of drivers can expect delays on I-85 South for the rest of the week where Gravel Springs Road crosses the interstate.

High winds and cold have forced Georgia DOT to reschedule installation of new bridge beams from overnight to daylight hours when the weather isn't quite so brutal or dangerous for workers.

That will also make life just a little bit more miserable for those in the Kirkstone Subdivision just down the road near Buford.

Mother nature paid them a nasty visit a week ago in the form of a tornado that damaged dozens of homes.

Massey Matchups Misses on Half of Semifinal Games

ATLANTA -- The Georgia high school football semifinals proved to be tough for Massey Matchups to predict. Out of 10 games, the computer predictor tool correctly picked only five winners.

That brings Massey Matchups to 20-10 in the quarterfinals and semifinals. The computer went 1-1 in all five classifications; its most accurate predictions were Carrollton's big win over Burke County and Clinch County's win over Wilkinson County.

Here are how the semifinals went. The computer's prediction is on the left; the actual final score appears on the right.
