Respected runner struck, killed in Gwinnett; driver charged with DUI

DACULA, Ga. -- Police say a driver is facing charges after striking and killing a jogger in Dacula early Friday.

Gwinnett County Police said 56-year-old Karen Ann Ray of Dacula, Ga. died after being hit off off South Pucketts Mill Road and State Route 124 around 7:30 a.m. on Jan. 1. 

11Alive has learned that Ray was well-known in with various running groups and a participant in major events around metro Atlanta.

Police released details on her description Saturday and reported that she had been identified and family notified later in the day.

According to police, Ray was struck by a 2015 Audi Q7 driven by 32-year-old Cristian Arizabaleta headed south on State Rate 124. Police said the vehicle drifted into the right turn lane and struck the curb and two concrete traffic islands. Sometime during this scenario the vehicle also struck and killed Ray before hitting another curb, a sidewalk and several trees.

 

Arizabaleta is facing charges of homicide by vehicle in the first degree, driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs, failure to maintain lane and reckless driving. Results are still pending on the alcohol and drug tests.
