BUFORD, Ga. -- A 23-year-old man is in stable condition after being shot during a weekend birthday party at Lake Lanier Islands.

The shooting happened at around 12:45 a.m. Sunday at one of the park's lake houses, which a group of friends rented for the party.

Responding officers found Union City resident Malik Davis with a gunshot wound to his chest. Davis was rushed into emergency surgery at Northeast Georgia Medical Center.

Hall County Sheriff's Deputy Nicole Bailes said the shooting began with a fight. Three men arrived at the party uninvited and started arguing with attendees. The dispute turned physical, and Davis was shot while trying to break up the fight.

Police are working to identify the three suspects, who ran from the house after the shooting. Witnesses described them as black men.

Flowery Branch Police, the Forsyth County Sheriff's Office and the Department of Natural Resources helped Hall County and Lake Lanier Islands officials investigate the shooting.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Hall County Sheriff's Office at 770-531-6879. Tipsters who wish to remain anonymous may call 770-503-3232.
