Belk santafest to spread holiday cheer

ATLANTA -- Belk department stores will host their first-ever santafest holiday celebration on Saturday, Dec. 1.

All santafests will be held from noon to 3 p.m.

Highlights include crafts, family-friend activities, Christmas treats and, of course, the chance to meet Santa Claus. Participants can enter a drawing to win a $50 kids wardrobe; three winners will be chosen from each Belk store.

to participate in historic fundraising effort

On Saturday, November 3rd and Sunday, November 4th, visitors to metro Atlanta Kroger stores are likely to be met by a smiling, uniformed JROTC cadet with an Empty Stocking Fund logo, as more than 2,000 cadets representing 30 metro Atlanta high schools’ JROTC programs will be working outside metro Kroger stores to raise awareness of and contributions for The Empty Stocking Fund, an Atlanta-based, Atlanta-serving non-profit organization that has been providing holiday gifts to Atlanta’s neediest children since 1926.

Swimming class to host tribute to veterans

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. -- The young synchronized swimmers at Collins Hill Park Aquatic Center are getting ready to host their fourth annual performance for veterans and military families.

The patriotic show will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 3.

The synchronized swimming group is made up of girls ages 8-14 who love to swim and are interested in honing their water skills in a creative way. Their Nov. 3 show is free and will be followed by a short reception.

Celebrate Women's Health with Paint The Mall Pink Events

Atlanta-area women of all ages are invited to Paint the Mall Pink at Mall of Georgia and Town Center at Cobb, October 4-7. A cost-free, full weekend of activities focusing on the importance of women’s health will feature health-focused activities, keynote addresses from local medical professionals, musical performances, giveaways and more!

The festivities kick off with Girl’s Night Out on Thursday evening at 6 p.m. at Mall of Georgia and 5:30 p.m. at Town Center at Cobb. The first 300 attendees to arrive at each mall will receive event swag bags filled with samples from stores and themed goodies. Girl’s Night Out is sponsored by Gwinnett Medical Center, Gwinnett Magazine, FundRacers at Mall of Georgia and by WellStar, Little Black Dress | Little Red Wagon Magazine and Run For It! Productions at Town Center at Cobb.

Sam's Club offering free diabetes screenings

ATLANTA -- Several Sam's Club Pharmacy locations throughout metro Atlanta will offer free diabetes and vision screenings this weekend.

The screenings will be held Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., and are valued at more than $150. They include glucose, A1C, vision, blood pressure and BMI tests.

"Knowing the links between risk factors, choices and solutions prepares our members to better manage or even prevent diabetes," Sam's Club Health and Wellness senior VP Jill Turner-Mitchael said in a statement.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention say about 1.9 million new cases of diabetes are diagnosed every year. If this trend continues, one out of every three U.S. adults will have diabetes by 2050.

Diabetes is also the leading cause of new cases of blindness in U.S. adults, according to the CDC.

Gwinnett abuzz for Honeybee Festival

BUFORD, Ga. -- The Gwinnett Environmental and Heritage Center (GEHC) is gearing up for its third annual celebration of one of the most important creatures in food production: the honeybee.

The Honeybee Festival will be held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 15.

It will feature numerous activities for everyone in the family to enjoy, including games, crafts, cooking demonstrations and, of course, honey samples. Beekeepers will be on hand to discuss what it takes to handle a hive.

The festival will also have a children's parade and costume contest, which will begin at 2 p.m.

"The GEHC staff always looks forward to this event. It is a great opportunity to enjoy time as a family and learn about one of our favorite and most valuable insects," GEHC programming and development director Jason West said in a statement.
