Annual reading program features veteran and his service dog
Gwinnett County Public Library is proud to announce New York Times bestselling author Luis Carlos Montalván, a 17-year veteran and former U.S. Army captain, as the featured author for the 2014 One Book, One Community countywide reading program.
 
Montalván will be joined by his beloved service dog, Tuesday, for events on September 20 and 21.
 
Montalván and Tuesday will kick off the 2014 Suwanee Fest on Saturday, September 20 at 9 am as grand marshals for the Suwanee Fest Parade.
 
At 11:30 am on the Town Center Stage, Montalván will read from his children’s book, “Tuesday Tucks Me In: The Loyal Bond between a Soldier and his Service Dog,” which details a day in the life of this service dog extraordinaire as narrated by Tuesday.

Race this weekend: Leave Cancer in the Dust

BUFORD, Ga. -- The Relay for Life team from Ivy Creek Elementary School will hold a 5K fundraiser this weekend.

The third annual Leave Cancer in the Dust race will be Saturday, May 17. Packet pickup begins at 7 a.m., and the race will start at 8 a.m.

Trophies will be awarded to the top male and female finishers, and male and female masters finishers. The top three male and female runners in each age group will get medals.

Registration is $25 per runner, or $15 for children ages 14 and younger. Families can sign up for a flat rate of $60. The fees include a T-shirt.

Eat at Chili's to help Tenn. tornado victims

(WXIA) -- Several Southern states were slammed by severe weather earlier this week, including Lincoln County, Tenn., which experienced a devastating tornado.

Those who want to contribute to the community's rebuilding fund can now do so, simply by eating at Chili's.

On Sunday, May 4, more than 60 Chili's restaurants in Georgia and Tennessee will contribute 10 percent of the day's earnings to the Lincoln County Disaster Relief Fund.

Chili's diners can also make monetary donations by adding extra money to their check totals.

BUFORD, Ga. -- The Mall of Georgia is giving moms a chance to unwind before their special day.

Indulge: A Stylish Treat for Mothers will allow mothers to take advantage of pre-Mother's Day shopping deals and beauty services.

It will be held Thursday, May 8 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the mall's Nordstrom Court.

Ga. Connections Academy accepting students for 2014-15 school year

(WXIA) -- A few seats are still available at Georgia Connections Academy for the 2014-15 school year.

Georgia Connections Academy is a virtual K-12 public school that allows students to learn at their own pace. It is fully accredited and open to all school-age Georgia children.

"We are enrolling 1,000 additional students across all grade levels for the coming academic year," lead principal Heather Robinson said in a release. "We have a waiting list as we open enrollment, so we encourage parents to get their applications in now."

Georgia Connections Academy will hold a number of information sessions across the state for parents who want to know more. Additional enrollment information is available at connectionsacademy.com/georgia-virtual-school.

Bridal expo coming to Gwinnett

BUFORD, Ga. -- All Gwinnett County brides-to-be are invited to attend a bridal show in Buford next month.

The Gwinnett Environmental and Heritage Center's Bridal Expo will be held Sunday, Mar. 16 from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.

A number of local wedding vendors are scheduled to attend the event.

Admission is $6.50 for brides and grooms, $7.50 for all other adults and $5.50 for children. Visit gwinnettehc.org to register in advance.

IHOP offering free pancakes for charitable donations

(WXIA) -- IHOP will once again participate in the National Pancake Day promotion on Tuesday, Mar. 4.

Customers who visit any IHOP location on National Pancake Day will be treated to a free short stack of buttermilk pancakes. In exchange, the restaurant chain encourages diners to leave a donation for a number of charities, namely the Children's Miracle Network Hospitals.

Beginning this Saturday, Feb. 1, IHOP will collect donations for Children's Miracle Network Hospitals. Customers can buy paper balloons that cost either $1 or $5. The balloons will hang in IHOP restaurants through National Pancake Day.

Anyone who purchases a $5 balloon will receive a $5 IHOP coupon to use on a future visit.
