BUFORD: GBI investigates inmate's stabbing death

BUFORD, Ga. -- The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is looking into a deadly stabbing at Phillips State Prison in Buford.

GBI spokesman John Bankhead said a 27-year-old inmate was stabbed to death at around 6:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Bankhead also said that authorities have identified another inmate as a suspect. Charges are expected to be filed later.

The stabbed inmate's identity has not been released, pending notification of his family. Authorities said he had been jailed after a burglary conviction.

Sheriff’s Investigators Recover $400,000 in Stolen Jewelry

On Friday August 19th, Investigators with the Hall County Sheriff’s Office recovered approximately $400,000 in jewelry in connection with a burglary of a North Hall residence.

On Friday, August 12th, 2011, Deputies from the Uniform Patrol Division responded to a report of a burglary in the 6000 block of Mountain Meadow Drive in Clermont. During the course of the investigation, Sheriff’s Office Investigators recovered jewelry that was stolen from the residence and on Tuesday, August 16th, arrested 48 year-old Linda Waddell, of Clermont.

Ms. Waddell was arrested without incident and booked into the Hall County Jail, charged with felony Theft by Receiving.

This incident remains under investigation by the Hall County Sheriff’s Office, Criminal Investigations Division.

Early morning bank robber still at large

LILBURN, Ga. –Early Friday morning, a bank robbery occurred at the Well Fargo bank at 1028 Killian Hill Road in Lilburn.

Authorities say the suspect, who was identified as a light skinned black male armed with a hand gun jumped the counter and secured an unspecified amount of money.

According to a report, the suspect fled to a waiting burgundy 2000 Chevrolet Impala. The car had Tennessee tags and a damaged right rear fender.

Wells Fargo is offering a $5000 reward in this case. No one was injured during this robbery.

Gwinnett County inmate charged with attempted murder-for-hire

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. – According to the Gwinnett County sheriff deputies, they have charged a man jail inmate with trying to hire someone to kill another person.

Inmate Richard Fowler was in the Gwinnett County Jail awaiting transport into the state prison system when officials received information that he was attempting to hire someone to kill a woman with whom he had been having issues.

According to the report, during the investigation, a Gwinnett Sheriff’s deputy posed as a murderer who had been hired to commit murder; Flower met with the undercover deputy and offered him money to kill the woman.  

Deputies obtained warrants, last week, and charged Mr. Fowler with criminal solicitation and attempt to commit a crime. Fowler remains in the Gwinnett County Jail without bond.

Feds crack down on prescription drug trafficking

ATLANTA -- A federal grand jury in Atlanta has charged a total of 13 defendants from two states with illegally trafficking in oxycodone and other prescription drugs.

The two cases arise out of intensified efforts to address Georgia's growing problem with prescription drug abuse.

"Prescription drug abuse is our nation's fastest-growing segment of illegal drug use, causing significantly more overdose deaths than cocaine, methamphetamine and heroin combined," said United States Attorney Sally Quillian Yates.

In the first incident, 11 Georgia residents were charged with conspiring to forge oxycodone prescriptions and sell the illegally obtained tablets.

Matti's Call: Minnie L. Byrd

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. – Gwinnett County has issued a Mattie’s Call for Minnie Byrd. Byrd is 94-year-old black female who suffers from Alzheimer’s disease.

She was last seen on Downs Way in Norcross on Thursday, April 7 at around 2:30PM. Byrd is about 5’2 and weights 130 pounds.

Upon her disappearance she was wearing a black and red hat, a black coat and a carrying a black purse.
