Social media training classes scheduled in Atlanta

Are you looking to learn the basics of social media and online marketing? The Social Media Learning Series, created by mom blogger Desiree Peeples, is launching a series of one-day workshops teaching social media and how to use it to promote and market your product, service, or business. The classes will cover four distinct areas of social media:

Blogging 101 - will teach students how to set up and launch their own custom WordPress blog.
The Smart User's Guide to Facebook and Twitter - will teach students how to use these sites to build relationships with their customers and clients.

Goodwill receives $5.7 million grant to help those in need

ATLANTA -- Good news is coming for many Georgians who are struggling to find jobs.

U.S. Secretary of Labor Hilda L. Solis recently announced that Goodwill of North Georgia will receive $5,724,222 to help people with barriers to employment, namely ex-offenders and low-income non-custodial parents, obtain the skills they need to find work.

The funds will go toward an Enhanced Transitional Jobs Demonstration program, which offers temporary paid work experiences to more than 3,500 people nationwide. The program improves participants' employability, earnings and opportunities for advancement, not to mention their self-sufficiency and long-term success in the workforce.

"This grant provides needed support to individuals who face significant obstacles to employment," Solis said.

LOCAL PROFILE: Peachtrees of Atlanta, debunked

ATLANTA – In Georgia, the name Peachtree is pretty common, considering the state’s nickname, “The Peach State”. And, perhaps the most confusing thing, for out-of-towners, to learn is how to distinguish between the different ones.

Seemingly, everywhere one looks there is a Peachtree something. From schools, to streets, to stores the Peachtree is one of the most visible hallmarks in the metro area.

Even Native Atlantans get lost or confused about which Peachtree is which because a new Peachtree pops up every couple of years. So to help debunk their differences the “Where U Live” team has compiled a list of a couple.

Perhaps the most popular Peachtree of them all, Peachtree Street, is one of the most notable street names in the southern portion of the United States. The street runs the entire span of Downtown Atlanta into the Buckhead neighborhood, where it turns into Peachtree Road.

LOCAL PROFILE: The LGBT Community in Atlanta

ATLANTA -- According to The Advocate, the U.S. based national gay and lesbian newsmagazine, Atlanta holds the title of “America’s gayest city” and Gay Atlanta, a subsidiary of the Atlanta Convention and Visitors Bureau says that Atlanta is the “epicenter of the LGBT South” but according to Phillip Rafshoon of Outwrite Bookstore, Atlanta is just a “progressive city in a conservative state, that’s in a conservative region of the United States. The city serves as a place where people from small, southern towns can come to be who they want to be” which is why the LGBT community loves to call this city, home.

In the nook that is Tenth Street and Piedmont Road, Outwrite Bookstore has been a staple in the Atlanta LGBT community for about 18 years.

WEEKEND EVENTS: 5K's, Car Shows and Garden Tours

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. – There are tons of fun events going on this weekend, in your area. We’ve listed a few of them for you to check out with your family and friends.

The Gwinnett Braves will host a 5K Family Fun run at Coolray Field in Lawrenceville. The run will begin at 8:00 a.m. and is followed by a one mile family fun run that starts ten minutes later. This run will benefit the American Cancer Society and will cost $30. Participants will, also, get a free ticket to the Saturday matchup against the Toledo Mud Hens.

Norcross Police are inviting you to take part in a 5k run that begins at 8:00 a.m. The run will be called "Cops Helping Unique Kids" or CHUK. The $20 registration fee will go to the United Cerebral Palsy Foundation. There is also a free run and walk that will happen at 10:00 a.m. and a family festival at Thrashers Park.

Career Day At Creekland Middle School

I hope I made my daughter proud yesterday at their annual Career Day. I was a bit nervous going to speak at the eighth grade class mainly because it was my daughter’s peers. She instructed me on what to wear, how to style my hair and makeup and to definitely be on time. She is a mini me I swear but I love her so much.

Many parents gathered at Creekland Middle School to share stories about their jobs while Mr.Keith Jordon was the key speaker to a room full of 8th graders. I love to talk to the kids and they can relate to me . I had two thirty minute sessions and the kids asked me man questions about my career, who’ve I’d interviewed, how to start a blog and more.

They kept me on my toes and showed so much enthusiasm. I think its so important to give back to our youth and community because kids need to see that it’s so much out in the world that they can achieve and accomplish with a little support,confidence, positive role models,endurance and a great attitude!
