ATLANTA (WXIA) -- At least four Metro Atlanta Kmart stores are among the 100 to 120 Sears and Kmart stores to close nationally, company officials revealed Thursday afternoon.

Sears Holdings initially announced the closings Tuesday, saying the closings were going to occur due to faltering sales during the holiday season.

In the information released Thursday, Sears Holdings announced closings for 79 locations, indicating that announcements of other closings would be forthcoming.

The company says same-store sales figures fell 5.2 percent in the eight weeks ending Christmas Day.  That came from a 4.4 percent drop in sales at Kmart stores and a 6 percent slide in sales at domestic Sears stores.

"Given our performance and the difficult economic environment, especially for big-ticket items, we intend to implement a series of actions to reduce ongoing expenses," said Lou D'Ambrosio, CEO of Sears Holdings.

The stores closing in Metro Atlanta include Kmart stores at 1605 Buford Highway in Buford, 9552 Highway 5 in Douglasville, 7965 Tara Boulevard in Jonesboro and 230 Cleveland Avenue, SW, in Atlanta.
