DULUTH – (submitted by The Hudgens Center)  The Hudgens Center has an exciting new Folk Art exhibit opening this month, featuring a wide range of colorful and creative work.  “We Are Folk: Exploring Traditions in Southern Folk Art” opens on Tuesday, March 8, and will be on view through May 21.  This Southern folk art and Georgia pottery exhibition was co-curated by Steve Slotin and Michael A.

LAWRENCEVILLE -- The Atlanta and Gwinnett Braves will host Willie Nelson’s Country Throwdown on Sunday, June 12 at Coolray Field in Gwinnett. The main stage will feature country music legend Willie Nelson, Jamey Johnson, Randy Houser and Lee Brice.

Pre-sale tickets are available now and tickets purchased during the pre-sale will enable ticket holders to enter Coolray Field 15 minutes prior to doors opening and also give them two “anytime tickets” to use for an upcoming 2011 Gwinnett Braves game. Doors will open at 3 p.m.

If you’re looking for some fun in Buford, look no further. Triple Play, The Dam Bar and Pizza Pub boast weekly Texas hold ‘em tournaments.

Texas hold ‘em is a variant of poker, in which individuals compete for an amount of money contributed to the “pot”.  

On Monday’s, Triple Play at 2685 Buford Hwy # 800 will host the tourney, on Fridays it’s held at The Dam Bar at 3280 McEver Road and on Saturday, Sunday & Tuesday at the Pizza Pub which is located at Bldg E, 554 West Main Street.

Slotin Folk Art Auction at the Historic Buford Hall, November 13th

Over 1,200 lots of self-taught art in a variety of forms will be offered the weekend of Nov. 13-14 by Slotin Folk Art Auction at the Historic Buford Hall, located at 112 East Shadburn Avenue.

The auction comes on the heels of the enormously successful 17th annual Folk Fest, also staged by Slotin Folk Art Auction in Buford. More than 12,000 attendees poured into town from all across the country to experience what was billed as “The World’s Greatest Self-Taught Art Show and Sale.”

While that event was a show and sale, the Nov. 13-14 auction will be just that – self-taught art sold to the highest bidder. Featured will be outsider art, antique and anonymous folk art, Southern folk pottery, vernacular photography, quilts, canes, African-American decorative arts, circus works, oddities, industrial molds, the strange, the unusual, the vanishing America.

The 11th Annual Buford ACE Classic Cruise-In and Show, November 6th

If you enjoy vintage cars, hot rods, classic muscle cars, motorcycles and other exotic rides this round up is for you.

This Saturday, November 6th, beginning at 10 a.m. S&S ACE Hardware Mower store will be hosting “The 11th Annual Buford ACE Classic Cruise-In and Show”. Car enthusiasts from all over are invited to coast through this celebration in automobile appreciation.

A DJ will be on hand spinning oldie hits while car show goers bask in the sights and sounds. Admission to this event is $15 and soft drinks are only 25 cents. Proceeds from this event will benefit the North Gwinnett Food Bank Co-op.

Haunted Night of Lights, this weekend

Similar to the Christmas light exhibit, Lake Lanier is hosting a Haunted Night of Lights event which runs nightly, 7-11 p.m., Oct. 1-31. Haunted displays put a fun spin on skeletons, witches and other ghoulish characters that lurk in the shadows. This light exhibit is suitable for people of all ages.

View the spooky scenes with wide-eyed delight before concluding at the Haunted Village where carnival rides, games and even a kid friendly Fun House provide additional entertainment. Pony rides, apple cider and a marshmallow roast make it easier to bear the things that go bump in the night while a shop inspires ghoulish gift-giving including tasty treats and farm-grown pumpkins.

Admission is $20/car Mon.-Thurs.; $25/car Fri.-Sun.; $40/van (up to 15-passenger capacity). Additional charges for Haunted Village activities.
