8 Berry students make Ga. All College Band

ROME, Ga. -- Eight talented musicians at Berry College have been selected for this year's Georgia All College Band.

The band is made up of some of the best college musicians in the state. It will perform at this week's Georgia Music Educators Association conferece in Savannah.

Berry's All College Band members include the school's principal chair clarinet, Jarod Holland of Oxford, Ga., as well as two other clarinet players -- Katie Stuck of Acworth, and Kathy Stuvick of Nolensville, Tenn.

Four Berry trumpeters made the cut -- John Heidbreder (who lives in Atlanta), Everett Reiff (Buford), Matthew Soares (Rossville) and Joe Vidalez (Dalton).

As part of a Green Halloween, GEHC will be hosting a costume donation and swap. During the month of October, drop off old costumes, masks, and accessories in the GEHC lobby. The costume swap event will kick off on October 13th, from 1-4pm, and continue each Saturday, from 10am-4pm, until Halloween. ALPHARETTA, Ga. -- "I've done everything from sales to marketing, accounting," said Emily Griffith. But one day nine years ago, long after most people have chosen their life's path, Griffith found a new one.

"I was early in my 40's, and I had no idea I knew how to paint," she said.

Turns out Griffith was a natural, and even though she calls a first painting of her dog primitive, it's still better than most people could ever do.

"The more you paint, the more your eye gets trained," she said humbly.

Almost 1,000 paintings later, Griffith is a renowned painter -- of pets.

"That's what I'm known for is capturing the dog's personality," she said.

Especially when that dog is the dawg -- Ugga. Griffith has painted Uggas 7, 8 and 9.

She also painted actress Tori Spelling's dog, who died.

And she's painted hundreds of not so famous pets, no less adored by their owners.

Disney Junior is celebrating summer with fun, interactive events themed around the hit series "Jake and the Never Land Pirates;" May 2012's #1 cable TV series among kids 2-5 and #1 cable preschool series among women 18-49. The "Jake and the Never Land Pirates: Summer Adventures" family events will be hosted by Radio Disney at Town Center at Cobb on June 23 and Mall of Georgia on June 30.

Gwinnett schools among best for music education

GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. -- Gwinnett County Public Schools is among 176 school districts nationwide to be named a 2012 Best Community for Music Education in America.

The honor, which is given annually by the National Association of Music Merchants, chooses school districts based on their music curriculum, programs and public support.

About 99,000 Gwinnett students were enrolled in music education courses during the past school year. All of the county's traditional schools -- 77 elementary, 26 middle and 18 high -- offer some type of music education course and/or program.

Additionally, more than 250 Gwinnett County educators are certified to teach music.

The deadline for the artists application has changed to April 30, 2012.

Unfortunately, we are experiencing some technical difficulties with our Arts in the Park website. If you have not filled out an application as of yet I have attached the application and you can mail it in before April 30th.
