Wrecked police car provides sobering reminder of Move Over Law

Wrecked police car provides sobering reminder of Move Over Law

GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. -- A totaled car is turning heads among visitors to Gwinnett County's Justice and Administration Center.

Gwinnett County Sheriff Butch Conway and the county's board of commissioners placed the car there for a very important reason -- to stress the importance of Georgia's Move Over Law.

The car belonged to Gwinnett County Sheriff's Deputy Justin Lunt. Last year, Lunt activated the car's lights and parked it alongside a roadway to provide visibility and protection for a work crew. The car was rear-ended by a driver who later told police he was changing music on his phone when the accident occurred.

Lunt was seriously injured in the crash and still has not returned to work. His wrecked car will be on display, along with a banner reinforcing the law's purpose, through the end of April.

GDOT to limit roadwork for 2 weekends

(WXIA) -- Here's some good news for spring breakers and Atlanta Braves fans: road construction will be limited for the next two weekends.

The Georgia Department of Transportation announced Wednesday it will close fewer interstate lanes than usual from midnight on Friday, Apr. 3 to 5 a.m. on Monday, Apr. 6. The construction break is meant to accommodate drivers who are heading into or out of Atlanta for spring break and Easter weekend.

Lane closures will also be limited from 10 p.m. on Friday, Apr. 10 to 5 a.m. on Monday, Apr. 13, for the Braves' opening weekend at Turner Field.

Traffic throughout Georgia is expected to be heavy both weekends, and drivers are asked to be cautious.

"Also, incident management or emergency maintenance-related lane closures could become necessary on any time on any route," GDOT director of construction Jeff Baker said.

Suspect arrested in luxury car thefts

GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. -- Police in Gwinnett County believe they've caught a man behind a string of luxury car thefts.

Investigators believe Deshun Williams masterminded a key-swapping theft ring where the criminals take fake key fobs to a dealership, then secretly switch them out for real ones.

Officers say Williams stole a $250,000worth of high-end vehicles, scratched out the VIN numbers, and resold them.

Police are also investigating Williams in connection with another string of stolen cars.

Williams is facing several charges, including theft by taking and theft by deception.
