Change coming for Forsyth County travel

FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. -- The Georgia Department of Transportation recently approved a new interchange for Georgia State Road 400 at McGinnis Ferry Road in south Forsyth County.

The Forsyth County Legislative Delegation said, "We are pleased that this important new interchange received approval from the Federal Highway Administration and GDOT. A new interchange at 400 and McGinnis Ferry will provide improved mobility and drive economic development in our growing community. We have supported this project from the start and will continue to work diligently for additional approvals and funding for this project."

An official for GDOT reported that funding for the construction has not yet been programmed, but the money may come from federal funds that were previously set aside for the project to begin preliminary design work in Fiscal Year 2014.

Commuter Dude features 5 of the stickiest traffic spots in Metro Atlanta

ATLANTA -- Anyone who drives in Metro Atlanta could probably suggest a challenging section of road that's lousy with rush hour traffic.

For the past few weeks, 11Alive's Commuter Dude has been asking you which portions of your drive to (or from) work, you hate the most

Dude will begin showcasing the five areas that came up most often. In some cases, he will try to offer alternate routes. In others, you may be advised to simply grin (or scowl) and bear it.

Either way, you will undoubtedly relate to the drivers in these stories who are sick to death of staring at the rear bumper of the vehicle in front of them.

Day 1: I-85 South at the Highway 316 Merge, in Gwinnett County. Yikes!

Day 2: Holcomb Bridge Road: The most heavily traveled arterial in Metro Atlanta.

Buford HS among 2012 AP Merit Schools

Buford HS among 2012 AP Merit Schools

BUFORD, Ga. -- Buford High School is among the 2012 AP Merit Schools.

The honor is given annually to U.S. high schools where at least 20 percent of students take Advanced Placement exams. Of those tests, at least half must earn a passing score of 3 or higher.

The College Board, which gives AP exams every year, reported Wednesday that Georgia is the 12th state in the nation for the percentage of seniors earning passing scores on AP tests. More than 41 percent of Georgia's seniors took at least one AP exam in 2012, compared to the U.S. average of 32.4 percent.

"Georgia's students continue to outperform most of their peers throughout the country on Advanced Placement exams," State Superintendent of Schools Dr. John Barge said in a statement. "These results show that Georgia's students can compete against any students in the nation."

The Autism Gap: The fight for insurance

The Autism Gap: The fight for insurance

ATLANTA -- Eight year old Ava Bullard is playing with her sisters, riding their bikes on their long country driveway. It is a simple act that defies those who said she would never talk, those who said she wouldn't function in the real world.

Ava was not a typical baby, or toddler.

Her mother Anna says, "You couldn't interact with her."

Ava did not play with toys. Did not speak. Could not dress herself. Did not interact with her parents or sisters. Slept two hours a night. She was in her own world.

Anna says, "It's like she looked straight through me. She would just...it's like you weren't there, if you were in the room with her."

Anna Bullard took Ava from doctor to doctor for months. One doctor told the family Ava was 'just weird.'
