Behind the scenes of tragic Gwinnett County standoff


GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. – Officials are providing more information about what happened and what went wrong in a SWAT standoff that ended tragically in Gwinnett County on Wednesday.

Two-year-old Phillip Nguyen died after police said he was shot by his father, Thy Anh Ho, in a Buford home. Ho also died from what authorities said was a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Gwinnett Police say the fact that the hostage was a child might have played an impact mentally on officers, but not tactically. They told 11Alive’s Ryan Kruger that they handled it exactly how they would approach every hostage standoff.

Police release 911 calls in deadly Buford standoff


BUFORD, Ga. -- 11Alive has learned more details about what happened leading up to a deadly hostage standoff that lasted almost 20 hours.

Thursday afternoon, Gwinnett County Police released the frantic 911 calls and the chilling timeline of exactly what happened that night, morning and afternoon in Buford, Ga.

Police: Suspect, 2-year-old child dead after standoff


BUFORD, Ga. -- Authorities said a man fatally shot a 2-year-old child and himself after a nearly 20-hour standoff in Gwinnett County. 

Gwinnett Police and SWAT teams from Gwinnett and DeKalb had been on the scene of the hostage standoff on Beyers Landing Drive since the night before. 

Police said the incident began when the suspect got into argument with his live-in girlfriend, who is the child's mother. The woman instructed another son, who is not the child of the suspect, to call 911. 

According to police, the teenage son called 911 around 10 p.m. Tuesday and told dispatchers a man was threatening to kill everyone inside. The teenager was able to leave the home safely, and the mother was able to leave later, but the 2-year-old remained inside.

Respected runner struck, killed in Gwinnett; driver charged with DUI


DACULA, Ga. -- Police say a driver is facing charges after striking and killing a jogger in Dacula early Friday.

Gwinnett County Police said 56-year-old Karen Ann Ray of Dacula, Ga. died after being hit off off South Pucketts Mill Road and State Route 124 around 7:30 a.m. on Jan. 1. 

11Alive has learned that Ray was well-known in with various running groups and a participant in major events around metro Atlanta.

Bank robber's note wishes 'Merry Christmas'


BUFORD, Ga. -- Police say a bank robber apparently touched with a little of the holiday spirit has been arrested.

According to Gwinnett County Police, the robbery happened around 12:30 p.m. Monday at the BB&T Bank located at 4394 Buford Drive. The suspect gave a teller a note demanding cash. At the bottom of the note, the suspect wrote "Merry Christmas."

Buford fight leaves 1 shot, 1 dead


 

Buford, Ga. -- Gwinnett County police are investigating a deadly double shooting in Buford. 

Police say they were called to a home on Vintage Lane around 3:00 Saturday morning. When they arrived at the home, they found a woman with a gunshot wound to her arm. She's expected to fully recover.
